As we count down to 1 November, it is a good idea to keep a diary over the next few days so that you can notice where your time disappears. The first time I did that, I realized how often I break off writing to respond to emails as soon as they arrive – the moment I see the alert message pop up on my screen, I immediately feel I should do something about it. But jumping between completely unrelated tasks takes much more mental energy than staying focused on just one thing at a time. It turns out that the advice to switch off email while writing is actually true!
